How to reset an Amazon Echo (and why you should know the trick beforeBlack Friday)

How to reset an Amazon Echo (and why you should know the trick beforeBlack Friday) - The Amazon Echo multi-speaker is one of the easiest ways to increase smart automation for your home. They are always heavily discounted on Black Friday and Cyber Monday,
which can make upgrading to a newer type a very interesting move if you manage your time well.
In fact, you can always get up-to-date data on all of the best Amazon Echo Black Friday deals as they arise by reading our posts.

If you decide to take the plunge and replace existing smart speakers and smart screens with newer models,
it would be very negligent if they end up languishing in the back of drawers or cabinets collecting dust.
Instead, donate to friends and family, or take advantage of Amazon's add-on program,
which allows you to get cash back on your old technology and discount codes for money off a new smart speaker or smart display.

Whichever route you choose, you will need to completely reset your Echo smart speaker or smart screen – including unregistering it from your account, before you proceed – otherwise friends and family will not be able to set it up properly (or you will inadvertently planned to leave all of your individual data with Amazon…).

A full reset can also be useful if you make your existing smart speaker not work properly. Of course, you should always use the tried and tested method of turning it off and on again by disconnecting the power cable and plugging it back in after 10 seconds.

If that doesn't fix it, you'll need to reset the feature.

how to unregister Amazon Echo

The Amazon Echo smart speaker can be reset by pressing a mix of buttons on the feature itself,
so if you plan to pass your Echo on to someone else, we recommend unregistering it first and then doing a factory reset.

(If you just want to reset a feature because it's not working properly, skip this section).

Amazon's smart displays, such as the Echo Show 10 and Echo Show 5, are slightly different in that there is no deregister option;

Instead, a factory reset can be attempted using the Alexa app or by accessing
the feature settings menu from the smart screen itself,
and this will also unregister the feature.

We had a dialogue with Amazon but they couldn't confirm why the procedure was different between the two features.
However, it did confirm to TechRadar that both options do essentially the same thing.
To deregister the Amazon Echo smart speaker, open the Alexa app and select the Features tab from the bottom of the screen. Echo studio Alexa then selects the feature you want to unregister.

Tap the settings menu, which looks like a gear icon, in the top right corner and scroll down until you see the section marked Registered to.
Tap on this and it will ask you to confirm that the speaker will be unregistered, Once you do this, deregistering will begin.

How to reset Amazon Echo

As we already mentioned, if you have an Echo smart speaker, you can perform a reset without unregistering the feature to try and resolve any issues you are experiencing with the smart hub.

We also recommend doing a full reset if you continue the feature to ensure
all your personal data is removed from the feature.
However not all Echo speakers can be reset using the same method.
If you have an Amazon Echo (1st generation) or an Amazon Echo Dot (1st generation), there is a reset button located at the bottom of the feature.

Use a paper clip or a uniform thin metal object (if you have a new iPhone or smartphone, the SIM eject tool can also work) to press and hold this button for 5 seconds to initiate a factory reset.

The Amazon Echo Plus (1 generation) has the same reset button but it takes 8 seconds to hold it down instead of 5.

For the Echo (2nd generation), Echo Dot (2nd generation),
Echo Plus (2nd generation), and Echo Studio smart speakers,
press and hold the microphone mute and volume down buttons for 20 seconds.

Meanwhile, if you have an Echo (3rd generation),
Echo (4th generation), Echo Dot (3rd generation) or Echo Dot (4th generation),
press and hold the Action button for 25 seconds or until the ring light glows orange.

Whatever method you choose, the ring of light will turn orange when the reset process begins.

When finished, the ring of lights will glow blue and then shift to orange again to show that
the speaker is in setting mode.

How about the Echo Show feature?

As we already mentioned,
Amazon's smart display is reset in a slightly different method.
Open the Alexa app and select the Features tab from the bottom of the screen.
Select Echo studio Alexa then select the feature you want to unregister.

Tap the settings menu, which looks like a gear icon,
in the top right corner and scroll down until you see the section marked Factory Reset.
Tap on this and it will ask you to confirm that the speaker will be unregistered and reset,
Once you do this, the reset will begin.

Alternatively, swipe to the bottom from the top of the screen, and select the
Settings menu by tapping the gear icon. Scroll to the bottom and select Feature Options, then select Reset to Factory Defaults and the reset will begin.

Again, whatever method you choose, the ring of light will turn orange when the reset process begins. When finished,
the ring of lights will glow blue and then shift to orange again to show that the speaker is in
setting mode.

Amazon smart speakers can also be useful if you install a Ring video doorbell in your home,
as it will let you know when the doorbell is pressed and allow
you to talk to anyone on your doorstep.
